EVEN THOUGH TRAUMA WAS IN THE PAST ITS LIVES IN US IN THE PRESENT
Trauma caused by childhood neglect, sexual or domestic abuse and violent incidences takes a toll on our bodies. As a coping mechanism, this trauma is buried in our subconscious as we cope with getting on with our life. The book: The Body Keeps The Score, by Bessel van der Kolk describes this situation. Bessel is the worlds leading trauma researcher. I recently completed a 36 week intensive course and became certified in trauma therapy with the Trauma Research Center which he leads.
Trauma is memory and becomes how you process information in the present. How you organize your interactions with others, what you see, how you organize your own actions. So trauma is not just an event in the past…trauma is something that makes you see the world and react to the world in a different way. Stuck in memory paradigm we need to soften that memory….the real issue is that your present reality has changed and that you see people different…it’s hard to love people…it’s hard to take care of people….it hard to engage with life…hard to have a sense of pleasure…and your body tends to really platy tricks on you…you are likely to feel ill, or not well in your body or numb or lacking in pleasure or satisfaction.
So what is needed is to get away from that primary memory notion and start looking more seriously at what trauma does to people.
The process of trauma recovery empowers the client to lead the way…we go where you want to go and when you are ready….but primary is to get the body working.
